Discovering & Comparing Meshes

Browse, filter, compare, and download meshes from the registry.

The Valence registry is browsable, filterable, and searchable. You can explore meshes individually on detail pages, compare two meshes side-by-side, or download mesh bytes directly from the HuggingFace dataset.

Browsing and filtering

Visit Browse the registry to explore all domains and meshes. You can narrow your search by:

  • Search query — text search over domain and mesh names, metadata, and contributor information.
  • Continent — filter by continent (North America, Europe, Atlantic Ocean, etc.).
  • Category — geographic domains or synthetic test cases.
  • Application — mesh purpose or intended solver (ADCIRC, storm surge, coastal, etc.).
  • Mesh properties — element type (triangle, quadrilateral, mixed), format (fort.14, SMS 2DM, etc.), and other structural attributes.
  • Validation status — filtering by gate pass/fail status.
  • Node and element counts — mesh size and resolution.

Results are sortable by node count or size (click the column header). Table, card, thumbnail, and map views let you explore results in your preferred format.

Mesh detail page

Clicking a mesh opens its detail page, which shows:

  • Authoritative manifest metadata — domain boundary, mesh identity digest, element and node counts, bounding box, provenance, contributor, and rights declarations.
  • Derived visualization assets — spatially sampled triangle previews ("preview" and "medium" LODs) and deduplicated wireframe geometry used for globe rendering and comparisons.
  • Mesh statistics — structural validation gate results, boundary closure, mesh fitness screening, and advisory scope verdicts (unsigned advisory assessments, never gates).
  • Download link — the full authoritative mesh file from the HuggingFace dataset.

Comparing meshes

Visit Compare meshes to select two meshes from the same domain and inspect their differences side-by-side. The comparison renders the authoritative diff, showing:

  • Topology differences — element connectivity, node count, edge changes.
  • Geometry differences — coordinate precision, bounding box, spatial extent.
  • Mesh statistics — resolution, element types, boundary properties.
  • Bathymetry and attributes — property value differences across the mesh.
  • Mesh fitness and validation — how each mesh scores on structural gates and health metrics.
  • Visual geometry comparison — wireframe views of both meshes and the regions where they differ.

Downloading mesh bytes

To load mesh bytes programmatically, use the valence-domains Python package with the [hf] extra:

from valence_domains import get_mesh

mesh = get_mesh("WNAT/hagen@v1")
path = mesh.load() # requires the [hf] extra; downloads and returns a local Path

You can also download mesh files directly from the HuggingFace dataset using the web interface or huggingface_hub.

License and rights

Every mesh in the registry carries license and contributor information. Check the detail page and provenance statement to understand redistribution rights before using a mesh in publication, commercial work, or derivative projects.
